Hello Kindred Spirits and Kindred Beings,

As we all know, so many marginalized communities in the U.S. are currently living in a state of intensifying terror and instability. Recent executive orders are rolling back hard-earned (and already limited) civil rights of Black folks, attempting to erase transness, heightening the criminalization of im/migrants, and pushing imperialist policies that are further destabilizing indigenous communities around the world. LMS has been especially concerned about the health, safety, and care needs of 1st generation Black Trans immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees.

Within and beyond our core membership, we are fortunate to be in medicine-making, mutual care, and organizing relationship with Trans African folks who — after experiencing violence in and displacement from their birth countries partly due to U.S./western imperialism — continue to face harm upon relocating. And while Black Trans immigrants live across several of the intersections that are targeted by the current U.S. administration, the needs of this community is under-focused in migrant justice work.

We know that this is nothing new. We know that white supremacists have long peddled anti-Black, xenophobic, and trans-eugenic policies since the founding of this country. We know that these legislations and practices were here long before Trump and will sadly stretch beyond him. And – as the smoke and mirrors of American “democracy” fall, the terror that so many marginalized communities feel is real. This is especially true for Trans African immigrants. With incidents of anti-Blackness, xenophobia, and transphobia on the rise — coupled with fears around documentation, detainment, and/or deportation — this community is now living in heightened states of fugitivity.

We are thus launching this fundraiser to address urgent and emergent safety needs of this hyper-vulnerable community. Money raised will go towards:

Housing/rental assistance

Healthcare access

Legal fees for seeking asylum, refugee, permanent residency, and/or citizenship status

Anti-deportation defense

Any and all other safety/health needs

Shorter-Term Need (6 months-goal)

In this first round, we are asking for $15,000 to support 4 Trans African immigrants in our ecosystem who have reached out to us with urgent survival needs.

Longer-Term Goals

Once this goal is met, we aim to raise further funds to support the safety and health needs of other folks. Money raised above this initial $15,000 goal will go towards this purpose of supporting more Trans African immigrants who are navigating crisis.
